Boy Scouts in the L.A. area now have yet another merit patch they can earn. This one they earn for not breaking the law. Seems kinda silly doesn't it?
Simply put, the new merit badge is earned after the scout learns "about the evils of downloading pirated movies and music. The patch shows a film reel, a music CD and the international copyright symbol, a "C" enclosed in a circle."
And who is at the core of this one? None other than those do-gooders, the MPAA.
 Dan Glickman, chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America, was quoted as saying, "Working with the Boy Scouts of Los Angeles, we have a real opportunity to educate a new generation about how movies are made, why they are valuable, and hopefully change attitudes about intellectual property theft."
How's this for exciting? Scouts will learn:
-The basics of copyright law
-How to identify five types of copyrighted works
-Three ways copyrighted materials may be stolen
And choose a related activity which could include:
-Visit a movie studio to see how many people can be harmed by film piracy
-Create a public service announcement urging others not to steal movies or music
I don't know about you, but this seems ridiculous. I'm ashamed that the Boy Scouts have gotten into bed with the MPAA. Yes, copying copyrighted works when you don't own them is wrong, but this is ridiculous.
