Blizzard announced this week that the upcoming expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, will be receiving achievements.

To help satisfy all the goal oriented players of World of Warcraft, Blizzard will be introducing achievements for all players to unlock in the new expansion. There will be more than 500 individual achievements for you to obtain on your adventure through the new content.

When players first login to the new expansion, they will see a new button on the main action bar that will bring up the achievements window.  The window will display a points total on top and the lower portion will include each achievement along with the name, description point value, completion date, and a progress bar.  "Select achievements" expands to display a list of individual components.  You will also be able to choose which achievements you would like to watch in your tracker.  As achievements are awarded, they will be announced to everyone in your guild and general area so they can all hear how great you are!

The achievements come in a few different types and categories:

  • General
  • Player vs.Player
  • Dungeons and Raids
  • Professions
  • Quests
  • Events
  • World Exploration
  • Reputation

The General category also contained an interesting note; it will have an achievement for getting a shave and a haircut.  For some characters, this will mark the first time in almost four years that anyone has cleaned themselves up.  Certain achievements will also grant players tabards, vanity pets, and titles.
