[Review] [PC]

I have been writing for Generation Gamerz for seven months now, and during that time those of you who stalk me have come to learn a bit about my likes and dislikes.  I'm a big Zelda fan, I love the Voltron cartoon, I enjoy finding logic puzzles online to review (usually the day before the article is due to go up *grin*), and I'm still waiting for Santa to deliver Zachary Quinto into my stocking.

Speed Racer 03 What you may not already know is that I'm also a big Speed Racer fan, having watched that cartoon as well while growing up.  So with the release of the new movie, it's a given that my quest for this week's article game would involve this cult classic favorite.

And while Iron Man might have beaten Speed Racer at the box office this week, the game I found for Speed Racer totally kicks the pants off Iron Man Dress-Up!

Speed Racer – The Great Plan is a Shockwave game (so you may need to install or update Shockwave) that is based off the 1960's cartoon.  You play as speed, piloting the Mach 5 in another race, and you, well,

Speed Racer 01

have to get to the finish line, of course.  However, the terrain and in true Speed Racer form, your opponents don't really want you getting there, and plan on stopping you.

What I love about this game is that you have all the controls of the Mach 5, including the special gadgets!  It takes a bit of getting used to (trust me, I'm STILL trying to get the hang of it), but it makes for a more challenging game, instead of a simple racer.

The control options are on the main screen, but I suggest you write them down and figure out the best way to use them for yourself:

Control
Alt. Control
Item
Function
A Space Bar
Auto Jack Makes the car jump in the air
(FYI - Don't do this in tunnels.)
B 2
Belt Tires
Traction - Snow and arrow ledges make this a must.
C 3
Cutting Blades
Cut down trees in your way to find new paths
4
Deflector Shield
Protect against bullets and keeps you alive
when you fall into the lakes
E
5
Illumination  Red highlights to see in dark places and underwater
F
6
Frogger Mode
Periscope Up!
G
7
Homing Bird
I still haven't had a use for it yet, but you can use it
to see the terrain ahead, find your way, as well as
distract opponents

Each of them only lasts for a short period, but can be reused over and over again if needed.

Speed Racer 02 To score points, collect the candy along the way for Spritle and Chim-Chim who are probably hidden in the trunk of the car.  Collect wrenches and Sparky will fix the damage on the car.  Homing Birds allow you to use the Homing Bird option.  And, if you happen to fall into a lake, there are oxygen tanks to keep you breathing.

With the original sound effects, music, and dialog of the show, any fan of Speed Racer MUST give this game a try.  Now if I can just finish the dang race...

This is why I usually stick with logic puzzle games, folks.

Go Speed Racer, go Speed Racer, go Speed Racer…GO!

Oddly enough when I went to play, the advertisement it played was for the Iron Man film.

ok 2 BSOD and a Mozilla crash...it seems either my system and this game or my browser and this game do not like each other. Dammit I was all excited to play it too!

The game is actually very popular at the moment. There were 16,000+ people playing last night when I logged in. If you pay for it, there's supposedly a multiplayer option in addition to higher levels. And you can challenge people. However, since i was only reviewing the free version, I kinda failed to mention that in the article on purpose.
