Alison is swamped this week, so you are stuck with me again. Sorry folks! The good news is, Alison did hand pick this week’s game, and it’s a load of fun.
Scribble is very similar to Lemmings, except you don’t alter the Lemmings, you change the landscape. The creatures in this game, Blots, are made of ink and much like Lemmings they will walk in a straight line, even to their death, until they reach a solid object. When they do “hit a wall” they will simply turn around and walk the other way.
The first thing you’ll notice is a save feature. Yes, a save feature in a flash game, and it works perfectly; just don’t clear your cache.
Gameplay is simple, but be sure to read the help screens and in-game signs; they will help! Navigate enough blots to the finish line to complete the level. The number required is shown on the checkered flag at the end of the level. Need your blots to turn around? Simple, draw a wall, and they will do a 180. Since blots do not climb, you must use the cursor to draw ramps for them to ascend.
Blots are not too fond of falling, and although they can drop a good distance, let them fall too far and they will splat (and die). Draw them an intermediate drop point, to lessen the impact. And always be sure to draw them a bridge to avoid spikes.
Two things make Scribble challenging. First, you have a finite amount of ink; remaining ink is shown on the meter at the top of the screen. Second, your drawings only last a short time, so you can’t draw items too far in advance. And you had better keep your Blots in a close knit group, lest your drawing disappear halfway through their trek across a crevasse.
In later levels, caterpillars, fire creatures, exploding monsters, rainbows and cannonballs appear. You must avoid or use these to your advantage depending on the situation. I found surveying the entire game board before moving my blots to be a great strategy. You can often eliminate monsters, and open pathways before ever beginning the long journey to the flag.
All in all, Scribble is really a lot of fun. It’s a great game concept, with well executed gameplay. I’m already on level 14 and still climbing. See you at the finish line!
