[OpEd] [News] [PS3]

Not surprisingly, for me anyway, the Mayor of Boston is planning on charging Sony in the PS3 launch related riots.

Apparently 500 people were quite angry that they waited in line only to find out that the Sony Store did not have all that many PS3s (16 apparently). There is even some video on the WCVB-TV site from a smart fellow with a mobile phone camera.

The title is a quote from Benjamin Franklin, and it holds as true today as it ever has. It’s also appropriate that I utilize a quote from a famous American Statesman and one of our country’s founders, as this article has some political overtones. And I’m sure Jack Thompson would love to weigh in on this one.

A few weeks ago, my daughter's school invited a guest speaker to give a lecture to the student body on bullying, and cyber-bullying. A note was sent home before the talk was given, briefly outlining the two topics to be discussed. I thought little of it, and felt it was a good idea, after all, I don’t want my daughter to be guilty of such atrocities, nor do I want her to fall victim to it.

So I managed to get some time to chat with Kevin McIntosh , a game producer at Torus Games. The goal of the time was to talk to him about what it is like working with Torus from an outside perspective like a game publisher as well as what it is like to work for Torus as a programmer or artist. He had some great things to say. For those of you not familiar with them here are some of the recent projects they have worked on:

In a recent legal battle Sony defeated Lik-Sang, an online retailer and importer of Sony consoles to Europe. They state that it was because they are attempting to:

protect consumers from being sold hardware that does not conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards, due to voltage supply differences et cetera

As my erstwhile colleague pointed out, my prognostication skills are improving. Good for me, bad for everyone else it seems. Perhaps this is why EA is doing so much PR work on their upcoming games these days. In the last 2 days, they have dropped screenshots and videos on many new titles including today's screenshots of Need for Speed™ Carbon. Yesterday was:

Rules to follow if you're truly a fanboy of [INSERT CONSOLE NAME] (That is, ANY console).

1) When someone posts something positive about the major competitor to your favorite console you must flame them with all the vocabulary of a seventh grader who spends more time in the principal's office than in any classroom.
