[News] [PS2] [PS3] [X360]

Bass Pedal 01 After the popularity of the drum kit pads we came up with, which have been dubbed "CigDangle's Quieter Drum Mod" in the Rock Band forums, we knew we needed to come up with something to quiet the thumping the bass pedal generates (also now in the forums CigDangle's Official Guide to Quieter Drums).  Not to mention, if I didn't come up with something quick, I could be facing eviction like some of my apartment-dwelling-Rock Band-playing brethren.

This one will not eliminate the noise or the vibration, but it will reduce it, and all for about a dollar.  It a very simple "mod" and you'll only need the following:

Home Depot sells the pipe insulation, sometimes called "pipe wrap", individually for about 98 cents a piece.  The piece I purchased had a label stating it was meant for 1/2" copper or 3/8" iron pipe.

1.  Separate the insulation
     along
the pre-cut split

 2.  Measure and cut two (2) 1.5" pieces
from the end of the insulation

Bass Pedal 04  3.  Place one piece of the insulation
      inside the other

 4.  Spread out both pieces Bass Pedal 05

 5.  Place one end of the insulation
      pieces between the bass pedal
and the base.  It should look
      like the picture at left

This quick, cheap fix will not eliminate noise, but it does eliminate the vibration associated with the hard rubber stoppers on the pedal, striking the base of the device.  The foam pipe insulation stops the pedal before this happens.  The foam will reduce the travel distance of the pedal, but it does not affect the functionality of the pedal.

Drum Pad After completing this "mod", I was happy but not entirely satisfied with the reduction in floor vibration.  When you strike the drums with a stick or use the bass pedal, the force is transferred through the item into the floor.  This is a real problem when you don't want the neighbors to hear you play.  So, I found these pads at a Menards store (a Midwest hardware/home improvement chain).  The package I bought contained four 2' x 2' interlocking pads for $16.  The version Sears sells contains six pads for $20.  Two will hold your drum kit, but four or more will also hold the drummer and his throne.

Believe it or not, the person playing is most likely responsible for a good deal of the vibration as they move to the beat.  These pads helped to eliminate most of the vibration.   For $20, it's a small price to pay.  Also, if you are a DDR fan, these pads greater reduce the noise that jumping on those pads can make.

So, there you go; for a total of about $30, you can quiet your Rock Band drum heads , your bass pedal, and your whole set.  I am always open to suggestions, so if you found a cheap fix that works better or a modification to this fix, feel free to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Good luck!
