[OpEd]

Portugal proved last night that EA can't predict the future accurately in football (soccer for you Americans) when they were unable to defend against the German "blitzkrieg" and lost 2-3 in Euro 2008.

I wonder how EA will respond. Will it be an "oops we dropped the ball" or might they go with the trusty "any team can win on any given day" reply. Either way they might have just lost a step on the competition. Even before the tournament started the football pundits here in Europe were favoring Germany who was quite strong a couple years ago and has proven to still be resilient beating out the Portuguese contenders and holding Cristiano Ronaldo scoreless in the match.

For those of you not in the know, EA predicted that Portugal would go all the way and that Cristiano Ronaldo would score five goals in the tournament. They did not and he actually only scored 1 goal in 281 minutes of playing time. A shockingly dismal performance from the the 5th player in history to score 30 English Premier League goals and who scored 41 goals in a single season as a a Manchester United winger/midfielder.

Maybe EA, much like Portugal, just didn't take into account all the possible variable and factors. Maybe they need to go back to the drawing board and try again. As they are considered the leaders of video game sports entertainment we should hold them to a higher standard than the others should we not? They should be able to theoretically predict with a high level of accuracy the winners of the matches and tournaments based on the massive amounts of data they seem to have collected over the decades, and yet they cannot.

How can they state they have the most accurate and realistic sports video games in the world if they can't accurately predict the winners, or even runners up of a 16-team, month-long football tournament?

Does this jeopardize their spot at the top of video game sports? Could another company swoop in and take away their market share due to the shortcomings of their prognostication skills? Tell me what you think in the comments section.
