[OpEd] [News]

After only narrowing escaping the peril in the first part of the interview I am now equiped with the spelunking gear and my friend Soldak, and his big ax Bertha, to take on yet another perilous journey. This time Steven Peeler and I shed some light on Clan Soldak, big burly fighter woman and fat mages. You might want to not look directly at the big burly fighter chick or the fat mage.

[SG]: How many clanmates are there in clan Soldak? How do you see the family growing in the future? Are you setting recruitment quests for new clan members now? (that means are you hiring)

[SP]: Clan Soldak is essentially a few, more or less, full time people and a bunch of contractors.  We are not hiring right now.  I would actually like to continue to stay relatively small.  A small team is usually much more focused and tends not to dilute the design as much.  It also gives us the freedom to risk more in the design since we aren’t risking as much money, which is the exact opposite of most of the industry right now.

[SG]: What's next for Soldak? Will there be another genre mixing game coming from the studio or will it be a more traditional style game? I've got some ideas if you want them.

[SP]: Well right now I’m hoping to do some expansions for Depths of Peril.  There are still a lot of things that I would like to add.  After Depths of Peril stuff though, we will have to see.  I don’t really think along the line of making hybrid games though.  I simply try to make games that are different than what has already been done, something unique.  In the case of Depths of Peril, that happened to lead to something that people have called an RPG/strategy hybrid, but that wasn’t really the intention.

[SG]: If you could be a female priest, female thief, big burly fighter guy or slim mage which would it be?

[SP]: A mage of course.  I can already be a priest, thief, or big burly fighter if I cared to be.

[SG]:  How come there are no big burly fighter chicks or fat mages in Depths of Peril?

[SP]: Well the Barbarians are a pretty fierce, rough group that picks their leaders by fighting to the death and there is basically a war still raging in the land of Aleria.  With this being the case, there just aren’t that many burly women warriors or fat mages.

As in aside, do you really want to play a big burly fighter chick or a fat mage?  It would probably be much more politically correct to have more variety of body types to play, but it doesn’t really seem that many people actually want to.  I mean Blizzard just added elves to the horde in their Wow expansion supposedly because everyone plays the alliance’s races because they are prettier.

Big burly fighter chicks and fat mages, a future expansion to Depths of Peril? Well it might make the peril a little deeper as the mage wouldn't be able to run away as fast and the barbarian woman would distract players from the monsters. Be sure to stop back in on Monday as I take the final plunge into the perilous depths surrounding Soldak Entertainment.
