[OpEd]  [PC]

Can you believe I have been on Counter-Strike hiatus for two years now? I can, and it shows in my game play. I was never amazing or anything like that but I used to be able to balance kills and deaths.

But you know what truly amazes me about the game?

No, not it's staying power over the last four years, though that is in fact quite impressive. No not the number of servers and clans that are still actively participating in the community, which is more than I could even dare to count.

It's the amount of cheaters! After all this time there are people still using mods and hacks and aiming scripts in the game. I often find myself asking "why?" because I have a lot of time in spectator mode watching the cheaters. I mean A LOT of time. So I decided to carefully study the guy "ICantBelieveImThatGood" to see what the deal was.

Now he may be a good player, I don't know. I do know he was blatantly cheating because he would be aimed on a player before he could possible have seen them. It was like he had Spider-Sense (TM Marvel Comics) or something. Actually he was like Spider-man. He could run through a door then jump, aim, shoot instantly and consistently would head-shot.

As a matter of fact he had 15 headshots in a row. It was a damn fine aiming script I guess.

When confronted about this, and this is the part that sort of irritates me, he went through the classic stages:

Stage 1: Denial

I don't cheat man. No way I cheat. (Grammatically this should have been “No way am I cheating” or “No way have I cheated”) You're all just jealous of my skillz. You wish you were good like me. I'M NOT F$(#IN CHEATING Wow look at my ratio...10 kills per death.

Gloating about your score when cheating is like ordering a half-pound cheeseburger with a mountain of French fries, a deep fried turkey and then a Diet Coke because you're on a diet...useless.

Stage 2:

Anger F&*K you h*M*S
You all suck D(*K

This is my personal favorite because at this point the normal players are getting under the skin of the cheater. So now we're generally all on equal footing in that everyone playing is annoyed.

Stage 3:

Admittance Yeah I was just testing my aiming script.
No, no I'm just testing. I'll leave after this round

Remember this stage because it will completely contradict something in the next stage which usually begins about 5 rounds later. At which point "ICantBelieveImThatGood" score was something like 100-6.

Stage 4: Whining

Shut the Hell up losers! You're just jealous.
Quit yelling at me!
I'm not cheating!
QUIT PICKING ON ME.
I'M LEAVING.

He's not cheating? But 5 rounds ago he just admitted he was cheating, and we all know he's cheating. So why deny it now? It sounds like the mewing of a lost little kitten who only wants attention. Maybe his parents bought him a computer because he can't make friends in real-life and with his attitude in the game, I can see why.

The final stage is usually about 5 rounds later. "ICantBelieveImThatGood" score was like 140-6 then.

Stage 5: Silent Abandon

In between rounds when he was killed by someone who then gloated over it he left the server. Not a word was said he just slunk off to lick his wounds or go cheat at some other game or whatever. I'm sure he didn't quit out of guilt or because he was ruining the game for the other 40 people playing.

Now what was the point of all that?

Honor?

There is no honor in coming into a game and cheating like a fiend. No one on the server respects you in the least bit. As a matter of fact if you do it and an admin is playing you SHOULD get the boot, though it rarely happens. This is why player voting was put into the game admins. Put it on so we can get rid of these types of people.

Stats?

Like we would truly believe you were 140-6 without cheating. The odds against that are about as much as Schwarzenegger being elected Governor of...

What? He is? Damn I need to read the news in America more often...ok.

The odds of that being legit are about the same as world peace.

Fun?

Really, it's fun to run around knowing you're cheating and ruining the fun of all the other players? That's stupid. I can't even see an iota of fun in something like that. Honestly it's just a big waste of time. Not only for you but for the other 60 players on the server. How much fun can it be to have some script aim for you or allow you to see through walls?

Now I don't expect anyone to read this and suddenly go "OH well, I should stop cheating." See, I know how it can be tempting, there are times I would like to cheat as well, but I don't. Because the moment I begin to cheat is the moment I stop actually playing the game and become just another reason why some great online games fail miserably.

Valve has this VAC protection available on many of the servers. But I've found it to be totally useless. It doesn't really do squat from what I've seen. This guy sat and cheated, and admitted he cheated, for about a half hour. No way to vote him off the server, no way to report him. Well no way to report him that actually appeared to have some purpose.

I think as a community we need to fix this problem ourselves. We need to take steps to stop this sort of things.

I know, you're thinking: ha! How?

Well that's something that the community needs to address. The public servers are as the name states, public. But if they're truly public then the player should be able to make a difference in how the game is played. Some sort of effective cheat detection needs to be built. Maybe all players just need to stop playing when the cheater is amongst them. If everyone stopped and just stood still for ten minutes I bet he would get tired of it and leave.

Sure you could just leave the server that you're on, but why should 60 people have to end their fun and gaming sessions when it's just a single person that is ruining the fun. Even the people on his team were disgusted at one point. Personally I would just begin Team Killing him...

Oddly enough, THAT gets you banned from the server, but openly using an aim-bot does not.

Want to address this issue with me? I use the name IMTrrible or SuperGuido on the public CS servers. Come find me if you want. I look forward to catching your electronic bullets with my head in the near future. Apparently it's my only real skill in that game.

Tak cau!
