[News] [MOB]

ggmobile-monday

Another Monday has come and again Packer fans are wallowing in the sorrow that comes with the end of a season. But what better way to forget the misfortunes of the weekend and get on with life, or at least ignore life for a while, than with a mobile game. Today I'm taking a look at Cubes: Curse of the Caribbean. Man I sure hope I spelt Caribbean correctly.

640x640_cubes_aniIf you like Tetris-like falling block color matching games then Cubes: Curse of the Caribbean is the mobile game for you. Set into a pirate theme you are given specific tasks to complete on each level as you chase after Smitty and steal his booty.

At least that's what I think is happening here. You are teamed up with a Captain Jack Sparrow look-alike who guides you through the treacherous waters and leads you after Smitty and his booty. How much like Capt. Jack is he? Well he looks like him at times, the dialog tries to sound like him and at one point Smitty steals the 'Black Pearl.' Of course to dodge the copyright infringement they don't actually mention what it is and it could in fact simply be a black pearl.cubes_en_prints_300dpi_2

Completing each task is fairly easy through the first eight levels or so. The tasks consist of collecting X amount of 'treasures' which in this case are colored cubes, collecting a combo of 3-6 cubes, surviving a certain amount of time, etc. The variety of the tasks helps to kill time and knock out boredom for about 30 to 60 minutes at a time.

Graphically the game is pretty, almost too much as it seems to bog itself down at times showing the graphics and doing the math of the cubes and such. It's very nice to look at and easy to do so for a long time, something I can appreciate in a game on only a 240 pixel screen.

cubes_en_prints_300dpi_3Musically the game is brilliant and I have to believe it is mp3 from the sound of it. Aside from the music, sounds in the game are sparse. On occasion the music refused to even play as if the phone was too busy trying to just run the game and not worry about sound.

My major problem with the game is the limited amount of play space and the springiness of the cubes. It's as if the cubes are made of hard Jell-O as they bounce and wobble and generally fly around the small playing field because when you clear some cubes there's a minor explosion. On occasion I have had a game end because even though the field wasn't full the explosion pushed cubes up into newly falling cubes and the game took it as a loss. It's sort of lame in that way, but I have still put in a good ten hours on the game so it's entertaining even if it does have several flaws.

ggmobile-rating-testSo overall the game is entertaining and pretty. The gameplay and lag are flawed a little and that's OK really. I would at least suggest you Test It! because it's a fun little game and can definitely take your mind off that major pile of work that many of us find on a Monday morning. Well not me, I just have to play these games on Mondays and honestly, that's not such a bad job in the grand scheme of things.

Aye me hearties!
