Yes, my favorite of all the Star Wars films was made into a mobile video game. Hell, it's been made into everything else so why not. Unfortunately this game should be called The Same Old Strikes Back. Here's why:
I will not get into the storyline because by now you should all know it. Too bad THQ Wireless forgot that there was actually a story and decided to skim over it just to get this game to market. What do I mean? Check this out, it's a list of levels in the game:
1. Hoth - Destroy 3 AT-ATs
2. Dagobah - Find Yoda
3. Asteroid Field - Shoot TIEs
4. Asteroid Field - Escape Star Destroyer (easier than it sounds)
5. Dagobah - Train with Yoda
6. Bespin - Find Vader
7. Bespin - Run away from Vader
8. Bespin - Escape Bespin
Wait a second, what happened to Han? How did Lando get involved? How did everyone get off of Hoth? Bah, the SNES Super Star Wars Empire Strikes Back was far better and if you have the SNES, get it. Better yet, dig out that copy of Shadows of the Empire for the N64, oh yeah, nostalgia!
They even dare to say 'stunning graphics and clips straight from the film,' what sacrilege. This game pales to even the shadow of the film. That's a lot of paling.
But is it fun to play? Well, yes and no.
This game does something that most mobile games of late have not, that is it possesses a control scheme that is usable and efficient, mostly. There are certain levels or activities that would lend itself to a better control scheme, notably the shoot the TIE-fighter missions, but overall they did a good job of using the buttons available.
The levels are not exactly challenging on any difficulty level, I played through the game on all three and it took a matter of hours to do that. As a matter of fact if you go to THQ Wireless' website and look at the how to play, it might take you longer to read that than play through the game at Padawan level.
Luke I am the father...of your boredom. Let's face it, there have been huge problems in taking a successful film and turning it into a successful and fun video game. In this case it seems to me that they are in a Kobayashi Maru, a no-win situation. Yes I know that's from Star Trek and not Star Wars, I'm just flexing my geek muscle. You see if you're a die-hard Star Wars fan, this game will piss you off. If you're a die-hard mobile gamer, this game will piss you off. Even if you're just looking for something fun to pass the time on your commuter train or looking for something to wile away those waiting hours at the local post office while filing your taxes later this year, this game will piss you off.
Overall, just don't buy the game, don't even bother checking it out because it seems like rehashed graphics bound to the best lines in the film "you're not actually going into an asteroid field?" with a core void of plot all wrapped up in a fun-looking wrapper. Too bad unwrapping it would be more fun than playing it for some time. It was, at best, mildly entertaining. It's a shame really, they did quite well on the control scheme itself, they just flubbed the game and if it's not fun, then what's the point of it all?
Sigh, can someone please get me a fun-to-play mobile game again? I mean it's been six weeks or more.
