Retia, fohns, and quins are just a few words you will face in this mobile Scrabble-like game. So get out your dictionary and let's begin.
Wordox is a smaller version of Scrabble with some similar scoring. The game does diverge from the original by utilizing the special squares in a different way. The two specials are orange and pink. If you put a letter on an orange square you get an orange point. Orange points cannot be stolen by the other player when they place letters. Placing a letter on a pink square adds your orange points to your score and wipes out your opponents gathered orange points as well as clearing the game board. When you place a word any letters that you use of your opponents are snatched and become a point for you.
On easy Wordox is exactly that, easy, as in not even challenging. But once you head off to normal or hard things become far more challenging. As with all computerized versions of word games like these, the computer knows far far more words than you do. On hard nearly 50% of the words placed were unknown to me. Distressing to say the least. But English is said to have over one million words if you include medical and scientific terms. The game features an "immense" dictionary with more
than 100,000 words most of which you might not be familiar with.
As an added 'bonus' when you use certain words you unlock an image in a gallery (20 total). The game offers multiplayer as well and players take turns passing the phone around to play their turn. This seems more fun than playing against the 100,000 word knowing computer.
Graphics are low-level as this is not an action game by any means. They're not bad, they're just not all that fascinating. The tiles and board are basic and the backgrounds are differently colored versions of th same design. The sound is fine but again when traveling I leave the sound off so as not to disturb others. The sound doesn't really add anything to the game so it was not missed when if was off.
Overall the game isn't as interesting as I believe it could be. It is a standard word building game and nothing more. Though being able to steal points from your opponent is cool and has won me a few games. There's not much more that can be done with a game like this, I understand that, but I'm not sure if it is worth the cost. Replayability is high if you can maintain interest in multiple games or find people to play against. I think the multiplayer is far more interesting as your friends are probably likely to know about the same range of words. So if Vivendi Mobile Games is offering a demo you might check it out, especially if you are a fan of word-based games like these.
