Beowulf is not the best game you will play on your mobile phone, but it does do some things incredibly well.
Beowulf is the game based on the new Hollywood film of the same name. In the game, you play as the title character, battling massive sea serpents, giant monsters and dragons, all in an effort to protect your people. Eventually, you must face the demon Grendel and ultimately Grendel's mother, "a fiendish woman/serpent hybrid who will seduce you in an attempt to give her another son".
The gameplay in Beowulf is fast-paced fun, albeit very repetitive. it's essentially a hack-n-slash side-scroller that reminded me of the Golden Axe series, or any number of other similar titles.
The developer breaks up the monotony by allowing the gamer to utilize environmental elements to defeat their enemies The game also includes 15 "special moves" that assist the gamer in battling the hordes of enemies and transversing otherwise impossible terrain.
These "special moves" make the game more visually appealing, and trust me, the game is pretty. The graphics are incredible for a screen this size, and definitely the best looking game I've seen on the mobile platform. One thing the graphics really convey is a sense of scale, particularly when battling a 150 meter sea serpent.
But the repetitive button mashing gets old after awhile, and honestly, it's a difficult task when the buttons are so small. By the same token, I did enjoy the game, and felt it included just enough story elements to be considered a brief retelling of the story/movie.
Overall: Defend your People!
Beowulf is a good game: far better than most mobile titles I've played, but if you are not into button mashing, or have large thumbs, this game is not for you. On the other hand, if you love side scrollers, then this beautifully rendered game is definitely for you. Beowulf is intended for gamers 12 and up; you can find the game at GameLoft.com.
