[Review] [MOB]

Heroes 02 I've always liked the idea of mobile phone gaming.  After all, having a great game to pass the time without having to carry another piece of electronics really appeals to me.  But the games have never really delivered, and often leave me flat.  Even Tiger Woods, which I still play on occasion, lost its appeal after I mastered putting.

So, when I received Heroes - The Official Mobile Game from Gameloft, I was obviously skeptical.  I figured it would be another license trashing title made worse by cramming it on a phone.

Heroes 01 Boy, was I wrong.  Heroes is a legitimately fun game, on any platform.

The graphics are great for a mobile game.  They remind me of a SNES title in terms of quality: well animated and vibrantly colored.  Sound is adequate for a title of this nature.

Retelling the story of the television series from the beginning is no small task, but this game seems to cover the major events, albeit in a very abridged manner.  Then again, storyline is something I never expected from a mobile title, much less one that was written in collaboration with the show’s writers as Heroes' storyline was.  You'll even learn more about the plot of the show by playing through the game.

Heroes 03 Gameplay is key in a mobile title, and Heroes nails it.  Heroes - The Official Mobile Game is made up of a number of minigames in which you play as Hiro, Niki and Peter.  As you work your way through the levels, you will utilize each of their respective powers to battle enemies or solve puzzles.  As you play through the 11 levels, you will run into the other Heroes' characters in four different locations: New York city streets, future New York, the Museum of Natural History (in New York), and Las Vegas.

Some of my favorite levels are played as Hiro in the museum as you avoid security guards, motion sensors, and lasers in your quest to get the sword of the legendary Japanese warlord Takezo Kensei. The puzzle solving is well suited to a phone keypad.

I am hoping for more levels, or new versions of Heroes - The Official Mobile Game as the television show progresses.  In the meantime, I think I'll go back and play this game again!
