The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you decide and we both drink, and find out who is right... and who is dead.
Normally, we all spend at least 8 hours a day at our place of employment and let’s be honest, we’re not working the entire time. We create little things to do: check our yahoo mail, IM a friend, or read the latest game news on GenerationGamerz.com. One little diversion that my co-workers and myself used to do at work was simply known as “The Quote Game”. We would write a quote on the dry erase board, and people would have to guess as much as they could about the quote. This is, of course, without resorting to using the Internet for an answer, because that would be cheating. I mean come on, I bet if you looked hard enough the answer to the meaning of life is out there somewhere and don’t be surprised if the answer doesn’t come back as "42".
The sources of the quotes could be anything from TV and movies to videogames. We all had our favorites. One person's favorite was the Simpsons, and another's was The Sopranos. This game could be quite challenging and frustrating all at the same time. You see, for people like me who do not have HBO, a Soprano's quote could be quite challenging. After playing the game for a bit, we came up with a basic set of rules. The first rule, as previously stated, was no Internet, unless you gave up on the quote and just had to find out. The next rule was not so much a rule as it was more the format of the answer. The answer had to be in the form of: Source (which was movie, TV, videogame, etc) followed by Who said it (either character or actor). For extra points you could even recite to whom the quote was directed.
One of the favorite sources of quotes was from the original “man in black” in the movie The Princess Bride. I do not think I have ever seen a movie with more quotable lines in it since Arnold Schwarzenegger uttered the words “I’ll be back” in the original Terminator. We would go back and forth for hours quoting different lines from the film seeing who could come up with the most obscure reference. The quote that we said the most often was “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” While I was doing some research on The Princess Bride a few weeks back, I actually found a videogame called “The Princess Bride Game”. When I first saw the game, I thought that is was another kids game but I downloaded the demo and tried it. At first, my fears were confirmed. The questions were very basic and did not refer to the movie in anyway. Then after I completeing one of the levels, I was faced with a question about the “Fire Swamp”. I think that I played the demo version for about two hours, and I found it to be quite fun after I had gotten through the early levels.
The next time you are at work, and things are a little slow, or the boss is on vacation, try creating your own “Quote Game” and see where it leads. Choose your favorite source, and just flip out the quote to a co-worker and see if the game gains momentum. I have noticed that groups tend to discuss the same TV sitcoms or movies, so choose one of those for you first volley into the quote game. Whatever your choice is for the source of quotes, remember to do well or "All your base are belong to us".
