[OpEd] [Retro]

rygarslide

My arcade collection has started again!

At the end of last week’s article I intimated to stay tuned for some new developments.  It happened, I had an opportunity to purchase a full size arcade version of Rygar and I decided to buy it.

Xenophobe Rygar was a game that I was introduced to way back in the early days of arcade, around 1987 if I remember correctly.  I never really played it much in the arcade since it was new and I was still getting used to the original arcade games like Pole Position and Tempest.  A number of years later I was re-introduced to Rygar by means of a gaming system that I still own and play when I am feeling nostalgic, my Atari Lynx.  I played more hours on that game with my Lynx second only to a bizarre game called Xenophobe.  I think that I played Xenophobe for 4 years before I looked up what the word actually meant (Fear of others who are different for oneself).

rygar Tuesday of this week I called my mom and her companion to give me a hand hauling Rygar to it’s new home.  I have a full sized SUV but it is still not large enough for a full sized arcade game and I need his Ford F250 to haul this game home.  I was pleased when I attached the appliance dolly to the game and found out that it was not nearly as heavy as some of my other videogames.  After much strapping and padding off we went for our 15 mile journey.  All was going well until Mother Nature decided that my trip needed an event to interrupt it.  We were traveling less than 5 miles from the origin when it started to rain, seemingly out of a blue sky so I pulled to the side of the express way under and over pass like the bikers do when it rains.  Our delay was short lived and we were on our way again in less than ten minutes.

We arrived safely at home and unpacked my prize and promptly set it up in the garage to see how it faired during transit.  The trip was almost perfect, seems a wire had gotten loose in the journey and I had lost the sound that was just fine when I bought it.  A quick search of the web revealed several schematics and manuals for the game and I now have them all printed out and ready to dive in and solve my new sound issue.  Sorry for making Retro a little short this week but I want to get out to the garage and fix followed closely by playing my latest video game acquisition.
