[OpEd] [Retro]

While contemplating this week’s topic, one thought kept entering my mind: I am old.  Not so old that I would be called “Gramps”, but old enough that I shave my head not to look cool, but to hide the fact that my hairline starts on the back of my head.  It was with this mindset that I went about writing this week’s article.

As an older gamer, I tend to be less concerned about the quality of the graphics and the presence of 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio, as I am the gameplay of a title and how much fun it is.  For example, the first games that I played on a computer were text adventure and text based dungeon crawlers. This was during my college days, and like most college students, money was scarce.  My friends and I would pool our money during the week so that we would have enough to buy a six-pack of beer for our standard Thursday night party.  On good weeks, we had enough money between us to buy two six-packs.

That being said, it is understandable that we did not have much in the way of disposable income to be spent on games or gaming systems.  Our solution was simple: we would buy the last generation of videogames.

The nice part about buying the previous generation of video games is that they cost less and they are usually easy to get.  I mean how hard would it be to buy a standard Xbox and Halo the weekend before Christmas compared to a Nintendo Wii and Super Mario Galaxy?

Battlefield 2 Which brings me to my point: now is a great time to be looking for that previous generation game.  I recently purchased a “lot” of 20 videogames for my Xbox for $60 from an individual who had posted an ad on Craig’s list.  That’s $3.00 per game; at that price you can afford to experiment with different titles and game styles.

Another great source would be Amazon where you can find some games new-in-box for little money.  My personal favorites are the first person shooters like Battlefield 1942: The Complete Collection or Battlefield 2.  Both of these games can be had for less than $10.00 each and after you beat the single player campaign, you can go online and spend countless hours honing your skills.

So what are you waiting for?  Christmas is over; put the decorations away, dig out your old gaming systems, and hit the bargain bins.  Its time to game!
