This week as I sat down to write this article, I was angry. Well, maybe not angry, but definitely frustrated. You see before I sat down to write, I decided to play one of my favorite first person shooters, Battlefield: Vietnam, to unwind and get in the gaming mood. I haven’t played much lately, and I was looking forward to a little head to head competition. To make a long story short, I was horrible. I would spawn, turn, and I was dead. I catch a glimpse of someone, get in a crouched position, and – BANG - I was dead.
What does a bad night of multiplayer gaming have to do with Retro Fridave? The answer is in what I did next...
I went into my desk drawer and got out my Atari Lynx II. I was done with the multiplayer thing, and I just wanted to do a little easy Dave vs. computer action.
The Atari Lynx, and its esthetically modified younger brother, the Lynx II, were the first color handheld portable gaming systems. The Lynx was really an advanced system in its day, sporting a really cool color display, a unique flip screen (handy for the lefties out there), a backlit display, and a bunch of great games. I would spend hours and hours playing games like Road Blasters (still a favorite of mine), and Xenophobe.
Xenophobe was a multilevel side scroller that took place in outer space and required the player to kill all of the aliens in the infested moon base. Playing against a clock, the player must hurry before the base was simply “sterilized”. I would play this game with my brother-in-law utilizing one of the first multiplayer personal video game connections: the “Comlynx” cable. This cable would allow up to 17 people to connect their Lynx systems together and play multiplayer games.
These games were great, but my favorite was Rygar.
Originally a coin-op title, Rygar was a side scrolling game in which you would battle the minions of the underworld with a weapon that resembled a circular saw blade attached to a return string. I spent many hours battling the hordes of enemies with my deadly bladed yo-yo.
Imagine my surprise, when reading up a little on my old Lynx II, I found Tecmo is developing a new version of Rygar for the Nintendo Wii.
Rygar: The Battle of Argus is set to be released January, 2008.
One person has commented on this article. 1. Untitled SuperGuido, Super Administrator I can already see the gameplay. Move the remote like a whip and hold down the button to let the blade out, whip it back and forth for a chain of hits and then release the button and have the blade come back for more powerful attacks. Looking at that video who could imagine that Rygar really looked like that
