I've got a little something I want to complain about here... Surprise! When they know they've got an open beta coming up, why don't companies take precautions?
Take Age of Conan , for instance. This was a huge open beta that a million people took part in. If you were a member of the planet, you could download the 13GB install file. It even went pretty quickly.
Then, there were two major (greater the 2GB) and two minor patches to download and install. This was, literally, a three day process. I was frustrated, but went through it anyway. Now, I'm sitting waiting for my prerelease login instructions for Saturday's launch and figured "hey, I'll check out Requiem: Bloodymare (a free to play, horror-fantasy mmorpg) while I wait - open beta for that starts Thursday!"
So, Tuesday evening I started downloading the torrent (good choice of distribution there, at least) and judging from the 12:1 ratio on this 2+GB file, it should also be fairly popular. Last night I went for the install and it started patching... and patching... and patching.
I awoke this morning and found the patcher had crashed - so I restarted it. I wonder what state it will be in when I get home.
So my question, or frustration, is - why the hell can't they put the major revision they need to distribute out for the open beta? Does it take that long to compile a version? I know it doesn't take that long to seed a CDN. If I had an outdated torrent, that'd be one thing - but this was linked from the main site!
I would love to give you all a small preview of Requiem before I get wrapped up in AoC, but at this rate - I'll be lucky to even see character creation by tomorrow night!
Time to load up WoW and kill something I guess.
