[OpEd]

I am reminded by the amount of school work Patrick seems to be doing, that sometimes real life is a grind.

Think about it, how many of us do repetitive tasks day in and day out just to earn some gold?  I am raising my hand as well.  I am not surprised.  MMO's are an art form just as any other video game out there (possibly excluding text based games unless you count the pictures in your mind.).  Art can sometimes mimic life.  Sometimes life mimics art.  So which is it going on in this case?  Are you simply filling paper work just to get a bonus?  Stamping letters but secretly just toiling for the rewards?  Are we mimicking the game or is the game mimicking us?

So why is it that the everyday toil of life can wear us down day in and day out, yet we find relaxation in a game that has different scenarios but the exact same mechanisms?  In most cases, we have to pay to be able to work so hard in the virtual world.  I cannot explain the phenomenon nor will I try to.  However, this is why I play free games, if I am going to have to work so hard for my "relaxation" I don't intend to pay to do so.

I think the web comic Sluggy Freelance put it best in their comic today which is part of a story arch that has been going on the last few weeks.  I leave you with a partial of today's board.
